The TSU – Physics department was establshed in the fall of 2005 through the hiring of its first chairperson, Dr. Carlos R. Handy. Through his leadership, TSU-Physics has forged a new and exciting vision in forefront physics research exploiting Houston’s world class leadership in medicine, space exploration, energy research, and electronics. Our department is committed to becoming one of the top programs in Texas with an exemplary capability in teaching, scholarship, and research. Our aim is to produce competitive undergraduates who can continue their graduate work at the top physics programs in the country. An important step in this direction is recruiting outstanding faculty who are nationally and internationally known for their scientific research, yet committed to inspiring greater numbers of students, particularly underrepresented minorities and women, to pursue careers in physics or physics related areas. In this we have been most fortunate. We have some of the best minds in theoretical and mathematical physics, rivaling any other institution in Texas!
At TSU we will pay special attention to the physics major and those choosing it as a minor. We will spare no resource in insuring that the impacted student, regardless of their personal background, will receive a quality education which can take them to the elite campuses around the world. We particularly support postbaccalureate scholars wishing to upgrade their advanced physics understanding (i.e. recent B.S. graduates wishing to improve their command of physics prior to enrolling in specialized graduate programs, etc.)
