Texas Southern University (TSU) and the United States Army Corps of Engineers – Galveston District (Corps) recently signed a Partnering Agreement. For TSU, the Partnering Agreement will establish a relationship with the Corps in support of higher education and ensure TSU students are knowledgeable of the Corps and it recruitment efforts. The partnership with TSU will strengthen the Corps’s relationship with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and enhance outreach and recruitment engagements to attract well qualified students in the areas of engineering, environmental, and civil programs. The Corps has a similar partnership with Prairie View A&M University.
To assist the Corps, TSU will provide faculty consultations and advisors, conduct leadership and diversity training and related programs at the Corps, and keep the Corps informed of the university’s research and Maritime transportation capabilities.
TSU students will have an opportunity to apply for the Corps’s internship positions and co-op programs. The Corps has expressed a sincere desire to be an active recruiter at the annual TSU Career/Job Fair. Dr. Lei Yu, Dean of the College of Science and Technology is excited about the new partnership and stated “Our Agreement with US Army Corps of Engineers provides great opportunities for our students to pursue their professional experiences and future careers.”
Colonel Christopher W. Sallese, Galveston District Engineer recently heard about TSU’s Maritime program from TSU Maritime Industry Advisory Board Member Capt. Marcus Woodring, Director of Port of Houston’s Security Department. Upon learning about the program and seeing the potential impact of the program, he sought out to establish a relationship with TSU’s Maritime program.
