Exploring Misconceptions about our Atmosphere (and the underlying physics)

Abstract:
We all spend every moment of our lives living and breathing in the Earth’s atmosphere. Despite this first-hand experience there are many misconceptions about how the atmosphere works. These misconceptions persist for a number of reasons including: (a) they are of intuitive but incorrect, (b) outdated information passed down through the generations, (c) simplifications of complex atmospheric processes, and (d) difficulty in observing some phenomena directly. During this interactive seminar, we will explore some of the most common misconceptions from atmospheric physics and meteorology, and discuss the underlying physics to break the misconceptions and improve our understanding of how the atmosphere works.

Dr. Michael Jensen is a the group leader of the Cloud Processes & Measurement Science in the Environmental and Climate Sciences Department at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Dr. Jensen’s research focuses on a combination of observational and modeling studies to better understand the lifecycle of cloud systems and the role they play in the Earth’s energy balance. He has been actively involved with the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Facility and the Atmospheric System Research Program since 1996 working on research projects studying the radiative impacts of deep convective clouds in the tropics, defining the characteristics of marine boundary layer clouds and the retrieval of cloud microphysical properties from remote sensing observations. In this video https://youtu.be/YN8tZ9r5Awc he talks about the goals of TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER).

Light lunch will be served.
