On Thursday, November 17th, and Friday, November 18th, 2016, the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (COSET), Office of Student Services and Instructional Support, hosted approximately 140 middle and high school students from Benjamin O. Davis High School in the Aldine Independent School District in collaboration with the TSU Office of Recruitment. The tours showcased the College through presentations of cutting edge technology in COSET laboratories. Department showcases included brief overviews of each lab to groups of students on the tour. Chemistry Department Chair, Dr. John Sapp, Dr. Oscar Criner, Interim Chair of both Aviation Science & Technology, and Physics Departments, and Dr. David Olowokere, Chair of the Engineering Department, and their staff members, supported efforts to attract and engage students with informative and demonstrative sessions about the College. Dr. Sapp coordinated the tours for the Chemistry Department laboratories, and motivated students interested in his area of expertise.
College graduation is becoming a critical, if not the most critical measure of both student and institutional success. Students received detailed supplementary materials regarding TSU admissions requirements, requirements for COSET majors, and support for ideas shared during the tour, as well as information on additional scholarships and strategies.
Students visiting the campus as part of the Student Government Association sponsored Project 21 toured COSET on November 18, 2016. Accommodations for Project 21 visitors were provided for by the COSET departments. Prospective students toured labs and witnessed presentations by COSET staff. The students visited COSET Aviation, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering and Transportation labs. The hostess for this tour was none other than Miss. COSET 2016-2017, Ms. Deja Payne.
Hosting these groups of prospective students reminds us all of how special our COSET community is, and how important it is that we continue the tradition of service that for so long has been part of the fabric of Texas Southern University and the COSET community. We are so very proud of the many positive efforts our COSET Student Ambassadors and Student Advisory Council members have made by assisting us as guides and mentors to these potential Tigers. We are proud to have a team who contributed their time and efforts to assist in planning, coordination, and supervision of these two events.
We would like to express our appreciation to members of COSET faculty, staff and students and to the Texas Southern University Office of Campus Recruiting who provided support:
Mr. James Gill sent a note of thanks to COSET for receiving the students from Benjamin O. Davis High School and Project 21 students. He expressed that the visitors had a great educational experience! It is our hope that COSET’s programs will continue to attract student interest in our College.
