COST Faculty Receive Department of Homeland Security Scientific Leadership

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that its 2014 Scientific Leadership Award goes to Texas Southern University (TSU).  This highly competitive award goes to accredited Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to build Homeland Security Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (HS-STEM) initiatives. This grant will be used to establish related curricula and courses of study by supporting the development of early-career faculty, and recruiting and mentoring students.

The title of the TSU proposal is, “Technically Savvy Homeland Security Professionals for Maritime Transportation Security.”  The Principal Investigator (PI) of the grant is Dr. Yi Qi.  Co-PIs include Dr. Miao Pan and Dr. Yunjiao Wang.  This is a five year grant with a total funding of $800,000. At current stage, the funding for Phase I (FYs 2015 and 2016) in the amount of $300,000 was approved and the funding for Phase 2 will be subject to the satisfactory progress of Phase I.

According to Dr. Lei Yu, Dean, College of Science and Technology, “This grant will foster and broaden the university’s existing B.S. level program in Maritime Transportation Management and Security, and enhance the interdisciplinary collaborations between different departments in the College of Science and Technology (COST).”
