Chair’s Message

Department of Mathematical Sciences
Roderick Holmes, PhD

Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

It is with great pride and deep personal meaning that I serve as Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the institution where my own academic journey began. As a graduate of this university—earning my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1995 and my Master of Science in Mathematics in 1997—I understand firsthand the transformative power of a strong mathematical education grounded in rigor, mentorship, and high expectations.

Mathematical sciences form the backbone of innovation and discovery in today’s world, supporting advances in science, technology, education, data analytics, finance, and engineering. Our department is committed to preparing students not only to succeed academically, but also to become critical thinkers, problem‑solvers, and leaders equipped to meet the demands of an evolving global workforce or pursue advanced study.

Our faculty are dedicated educators and scholars who place student success at the center of their work. Through engaging instruction, undergraduate research opportunities, and individualized mentoring, we emphasize conceptual understanding, analytical reasoning, and real‑world application. We strive to create learning experiences that challenge students while providing the support necessary for growth and confidence.

As a department, we play a vital role in the university’s academic mission by delivering high‑quality foundational and advanced courses that serve majors, minors, and students across multiple disciplines. We are committed to continuously improving our curriculum, ensuring alignment with disciplinary standards, emerging fields, and the needs of our students.

Equally central to our mission is a commitment to access, inclusion, and excellence. We believe mathematical talent exists in every community, and we intentionally cultivate it by fostering an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Our goal is to empower students to see themselves as mathematicians and to recognize mathematics as a tool for opportunity, impact, and service.

Returning to lead this department has been both an honor and a responsibility. I remain deeply grateful for the faculty mentors who shaped my development and for the students whose curiosity and determination inspire our work today. I invite you to explore our programs, connect with our faculty, and join us in advancing the mathematical sciences.

Sincerely,
Roderick Holmes,
Chair, Department of Mathematical Sciences
